Bringing Summer Indoors

This time of year is my favorite. In the air there is a crisp breeze that beckons fall and as the days shorten they squeeze softly slanting sunlight into magical hours. The leaves are starting to don their vibrant cloaks and nights are cool and damp. Even now summer seems still readily available for lazy days, outdoor dining and recreation, favorite shorts and tees. My mind wanders to approaching winter which has its own beauty but is much too restful and serene at times.

Why not decorate with summer colors year round? I am inspired by some new lines and color palettes that seem to defy the change in season, heralding a fresh energy as we approach the winter season. Cleanly paired with white these intense shades of lapis, aqua, tangerine and raspberry are fun, uplifting and charming. The classic blue and white color combination never goes out of style and is a great translator of everything from ikats to large graphic florals. Shots of gray are a new twist, offering shading like long summer shadows.

Thibaut has a great new fabric/wallcovering collection (Resort) with imaginative graphics and these super summer colors. Alesandra Branca shares a similar enthusiasm for oversized graphics and vibrants on white in her new collection for F Schumacher and Thom Felicia chooses grays, electric reds, chartreuse, crisp blues and whites in his second collection presented this fall for Kravet. Traditional Interiors seem to be more fun-loving than ever as we look to these new influences. We may be approaching the season in which our raspberries are shipped cross country and our indoor plants are dropping blossoms, but the playbook on winter decorating is anything but subdued and predictable.
